Loons are a popular bird up here in Alaska, and can often be found calmly swimming in one of our over 3 million lakes. Unlike anywhere else in North America, Alaska is a crucial habitat for all five of the world's loon species (Common, Pacific, Red-Throated, Yellow-billed and Arctic). The common loon pictured here is out for a leisurely swim while her afternoon snack swims gently below.
